My work is imbued with the wealth of knowledge that has come from my years of experience working in the realm of child and family development. It is a culmination of direct hands-on experience as well as a theoretical and research-based education developing an understanding of the communication behind children’s behavior
Play is the best remedy to once again rejoice in being a parent!
When you take time to play or engage in a fun activity with your child you will be reminded of the joyful aspects that come with parenting. You will also be having fun, which boosts beneficial oxytocin levels. Oxytocin is a hormone and neurotransmitter that plays a primary role in relationship development. It contributes to feelings of relaxation, trust, and an overall positive mind-set. It has the power to reduce your body’s stress responses, bringing calm to anxious or overworked minds. It is basically a free massage for your brain and body. What could be better?
I take an approach that nurtures and empowers the whole family. I believe that families are a synergistic unit. Each member is equally important to the well-being of the whole family. Everyone contributes in their own way and has a unique approach to life that must be revered and respected.
All of the information I provide in my articles can be adapted to children of various ages and temperaments, unless otherwise noted. My goal is to make the knowledge as accessible and applicable as possible. However, due to the unique nature of each family I will never be able to write a one-size-fits-all article.
If you find that you desire parenting guidance that is personally crafted to your needs as a family, I would love to connect with you through one of my programs.
Teachable moments are opportunities for learning. They are present throughout the day and can happen spontaneously. A teachable moment differs from the common concept of teaching in that it does not happen in a rigid setting but rather as a facet of the flow of life.
The information I provide in my teachable moments posts, reflects that life is learning. In every interaction we share with our children there is the potential to impart teaching. The knowledge in my articles is presented in a way that I hope will become part of your parenting, interwoven in how you speak and act with your child.
Being authentic means living in your truth. It calls for an awareness of the range of emotions that reside within. It means honoring the wisdom in emotions and intuition through thoughts, actions, and how you live your life. As children, this comes naturally. However, we live in a world that does not support these values and so authenticity needs to be nurtured.
Being an authentic parent entails that you cultivate your own personal authenticity and act as an empowered model for your child. You are your child’s foremost teacher and guide.
Effective Parenting looks different for everyone as each family is unique. There is no universal right way to parent.
When it comes to raising kids we often get caught up in our children’s developmental milestones. We quantify our success as parents by how quickly our child can talk or read, for example. Instead, I encourage you to assess your effectiveness as a parent in more qualitative measures. How much joy do you feel as a parent? Are there road-blocks on your path that cause you stress? Does your child approach life with happiness and curiosity?
I am here to ensure that your child is not only developing appropriately but that your whole family is nurtured and empowered.
It can be challenging to understand why children behave the way they do. Child development theory and neuroscience offer insights into the potential causes of behavior and learning in children. They can be used as tools to nurture children’s development and overall well-being.
As much of the information provided by these theories points to the power of children’s brains and bodies, it shows the depth of inherent wisdom children have. This innate wisdom primes children with a curiosity and desire to learn about their world.
Having an awareness about what is going on in a child’s body also provides clarity that can help you stay calm in moments of challenging behavior or struggle. For example, when a child is throwing a tantrum they are not intentionally trying to embarrass or stress you out. Their prefrontal cortex has disengaged, they have “flipped their lid”, and they are no longer capable of rational thought. They are acting purely from their emotional hindbrain. Knowing this, you would also know that until their prefrontal cortex is engaged, they are unable to really hear what you are saying or empathize with your feelings. So the best course of action, in such a scenario, would be to try and soothe your child or just let them be until they are able to self-soothe.
